It shows the port of Le Havre in France. This was Monet's hometown. He painted the scene at dawn. The painting shows a bright red sun. We can see small rowboats in the water. In the back, there are larger ships and tall chimneys.

Monet used loose brush strokes. He did not try to make every detail perfect. Instead, he wanted to show the feeling of the mist and light. This style helped start a new art movement. People call this movement Impressionism. The name came from the title of this very painting.

Some critics at first did not like the style. They thought the work looked unfinished. But others saw the beauty in how it captured a quick moment. Monet even made other paintings with "impression" in the title later on. He wanted to capture how light and air change the world.
