Artists wanted to try new things. They often left old traditions behind. They used fresh ideas about materials. Many artists moved toward abstraction. This means they used shapes instead of clear stories.

Some artists were Post-Impressionists. Vincent van Gogh was one of them. Others used bright colors. A group called the Fauves made wild landscapes. Henri Matisse was a leader here. His painting "The Dance" used warm colors. It showed people dancing together.

Other artists used new shapes. Pablo Picasso helped start Cubism. He used shapes like cubes, spheres, and cones. He worked with Georges Braque. They made many new styles.
