Modernism is a special time in music history. It began around 1890. It lasted until about 1930. Some think it ended after the great wars.

During this time, composers wanted to try new things. They called this innovation. They did not want to follow old rules. Instead, they looked for new ways to use melody and rhythm. They also changed how notes work together. This is called harmony.

One famous composer was Arnold Schoenberg. He rejected tonality. Tonality is the old way of using notes. He used a new way called twelve-tone music. Another composer was Igor Stravinsky. He moved away from steady, even rhythms.

In modernism, no single style was the leader. Many different styles lived together at once. This is called linguistic plurality. Some music tried to show how the mind works. It used sound to show deep feelings. It also reflected new things like science and big cities. It was a time of great change for the world and for music.
