Literary modernism

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Modernist literature was a new way of writing. It began in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Writers wanted to break away from old rules. Ezra Pound said writers should "Make it new." This meant they tried new ways to tell stories.

The world was changing fast during this time. Big wars and new machines changed how people lived. This made many writers feel that old ways of thinking did not work anymore. Some writers even felt that "things fall apart." They felt the old center of the world was gone.

Modernists also looked at how the mind works. They were interested in how we see the world. Some used a way called stream of consciousness. This shows the flow of thoughts in a person's head. Writers like Virginia Woolf and James Joyce used this style.

Art was changing in other ways too. Painters like Claude Monet used soft colors. They did not try to make things look perfect. Instead, they showed how things felt. This helped people see many different truths in one world.
