Modern architecture

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Modern architecture is a way of making buildings. It became very popular in the 20th century. These buildings look very clean and simple. Architects wanted to stop using old styles. They did not want extra decorations. Instead, they used a rule called functionalism. This means the shape of a building follows its job.

New tools and materials changed everything. Builders used steel, glass, and concrete. They used reinforced concrete, which is concrete with iron bars inside. This made buildings strong and light. They could also build much taller. The safety elevator helped people live in tall buildings. This led to the first skyscrapers. One early example was the Home Insurance Building in Chicago. It was ten stories tall.

Many famous people helped this style grow. Louis Sullivan said form should follow function. Frank Lloyd Wright made Prairie Houses. These homes had long, flat lines. They looked like they grew from the earth. Other architects like Le Corbusier used pure shapes. They wanted buildings to be new and useful for modern life.
