Modern architecture

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Modern architecture is a style of building that changed how our cities look. It became very popular during the 20th century. This movement sat between the older Art Deco style and the later postmodern style. Architects wanted to move away from old, decorated designs. Instead, they focused on a rule called functionalism. This means the shape of a building should follow its job. They also loved minimalism, which means keeping things very simple. They often rejected extra decorations like carvings or fancy patterns.

New ways of building made these designs possible. Builders began using glass, steel, and concrete. They used reinforced concrete, which is concrete with iron bars inside. This material is very strong and can be molded into many shapes. It allows for huge spaces without needing many support pillars. Large windows became common because of a new way to make plate glass. The invention of the safety elevator by Elisha Otis also helped. This tool made it practical for people to live in very tall buildings.

This movement grew from big changes in technology and engineering. In 1853, François Coignet built the first reinforced concrete house in Paris. Later, William Le Baron Jenney built the Home Insurance Building in Chicago in 1884. This was a ten-story building with a steel frame. It was one of the first true skyscrapers. In the early 1900s, architects like Auguste Perret used concrete for apartment buildings. Some buildings, like the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, used concrete to keep views clear. These steps helped move architecture into a new era.

Many famous architects helped shape this new look. In America, Frank Lloyd Wright designed Prairie Houses. These homes had long, flat lines that looked like they grew from the earth. In Europe, Otto Wagner designed buildings that were very simple and geometric. He even designed a bank in Vienna with a spare interior. Another group called the Deutscher Werkbund formed in Munich in 1907. They wanted to bring designers and businesses together. This group helped create high-quality, well-designed products and buildings.

Modern architecture connects to the world we see every day. It changed how we think about offices, homes, and big city centers. For a long time, it was the main style for large companies. After World War II, it became the most dominant style until the 1980s. Eventually, postmodern architecture began to take its place. Even so, the ideas of using new materials remain important. We still see the influence of these simple, strong shapes in our modern world.
