Instead of following old rules, these architects wanted to show deep emotions. They used shapes that might look distorted or broken to share a mood. Some buildings look like things from nature, such as crystals, rocks, or caves.

This style was very popular in Europe during the early 1900s. It was especially strong in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Denmark. In the Netherlands, people call this style the Amsterdam School.

Architects wanted their work to be a true form of art.

To make these buildings, architects used many different ways. They often used new materials like steel and glass. They also used brick in very unusual ways.

Some buildings were made to look like natural shapes, which is called biomorphic. This means they might look like living things. Because money was tight after World War I, many ideas were never built. Instead, architects made beautiful drawings or small models on paper.

Some designers even worked on sets for movies or plays to show their ideas.

This movement grew out of a very busy time in history. Many architects fought in World War I. Their experiences changed how they saw the world. They wanted to create a new and better society.

This period included the German Revolution of 1919. The architects wanted to find new ways to build for a changing world. They often looked to the past for ideas, like the Gothic or Romanesque styles. They also learned from different cultures, like Islamic or Indian art. This helped them create something that felt fresh and original.

There are many important names and places to know in this history. Erich Mendelsohn built the famous Einstein Tower in Potsdam.

Many famous architects worked during this time. These include Bruno Taut, Walter Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe. By 1925, many of them moved toward a more practical style. This new way was called Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Objectivity. It was a more matter-of-fact way to build. However, a few people like Hans Scharoun kept using expressionist ideas.

Expressionism connects to many other things you might know. It is like the paintings and music from the same time.

It also connects to ideas about the human mind. Architects wanted to see how shapes could affect how people feel. They studied how dreams and the unconscious mind work. They even looked at nature, like the studies of Ernst Haeckel. Some architects were inspired by the books of Friedrich Nietzsche. All these ideas helped them turn buildings into powerful works of art.
