Der Blaue Reiter was a special group of artists.

They wanted to change how people saw art. The name means "The Blue Rider." This name came from a painting by Wassily Kandinsky.

Kandinsky and Franz Marc led the group together. They believed art should show deep, spiritual truths. They felt colors could carry special meanings. For Kandinsky, the color blue was very important. He thought dark blue could help people feel the eternal.

The artists worked in many different ways. Some used bright colors to show feelings. Others tried to make art that looked like music. They liked to use a spontaneous way of painting. This means they painted with quick, natural moves. They also looked at art from many other places. They studied old art from the Middle Ages. They also looked at simple folk art. This helped them move toward abstract art. Abstract art does not always look like real objects.

The group started because of a big disagreement.

Kandinsky was part of a group called the N.K.V.M. in Munich. In 1911, the leaders of that group rejected one of his paintings. This painting was called "Composition V." Kandinsky and his friends decided to start their own group. They held a show at the Thannhauser Gallery in 1911. This show was right next to the official one. It was a very big sensation in the art world.

The group was active for only three years. They held two main exhibitions in Munich. The first one opened on December 18, 1911. It showed 43 works by 14 different artists.

They also made a famous book called an almanac. It came out in early 1912. The book had over 140 pieces of art inside. It included drawings by children and art from Japan. It also had art from Africa and the South Pacific. The group ended in 1914 when World War I began.

Even though the group was small, it was very important. The war changed everything for the artists. Franz Marc and August Macke were killed in the war. Other artists had to move to different countries. Later, some leaders tried to hide their art. They called it "degenerate art." But this actually made the paintings more famous. Today, you can see their work in museums. Many modern artists still use the ideas they shared.
