They called it Der Blaue Reiter. This name means The Blue Rider. Two men led the group. Their names were Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. They wanted to share new ideas about art.

They believed art could show spiritual truths. They loved the color blue. For Kandinsky, blue was a very deep color. It helped people feel a sense of the eternal. The artists also liked music. They thought art and music could work together.

The group made a book called an almanac. It had art from many places. They included drawings by children and folk art. They also showed art from Africa and Japan. The group held big shows in many cities. These shows traveled across Europe. The group lasted for only three years. It ended when World War I began in 1914. Many artists had to leave or move away. Even so, their ideas changed art forever.
