Expressionism

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Expressionism is a bold way of making art. It began in Northern Europe near the start of the 20th century. This movement started with poetry and painting. Soon, it spread to many other things. People used it for music, dance, and theatre. It even changed how buildings were designed.

Artists use this style to share their inner feelings. Instead of showing how a person or place looks, they show how it feels. They might change shapes or use bright colors. This creates a strong emotional effect. They want to show a mood or a deep idea.

There are many ways to create Expressionist art. Artists do not just copy what they see. They use their own subjective view. This means they look at the world through their own feelings. They might distort objects to make you feel a certain way. Some people say this style shows angst, which is a feeling of worry. It is a reaction against styles like Naturalism. Naturalism tries to show things exactly as they are in real life. Expressionism chooses to show the soul instead.

This movement grew through many different groups. In 1905, a group called Die Brücke formed in Dresden. This name means "The Bridge." Later, in 1911, a group called Der Blaue Reiter started in Munich. This name means "The Blue Rider." It came from a painting by Wassily Kandinsky. Many artists joined these groups to work together. They wanted to move away from old traditions. The term Expressionism became very firm by 1913.

Many famous people helped shape this style. Some artists lived long ago, like El Greco. His work is sometimes called a precursor to Expressionism. In the 1900s, artists like Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh were important influences. In Germany, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner led important groups. Many artists from the "School of Paris" also joined in. This group included many people of Jewish origin. Expressionism was very popular in Berlin during the Weimar Republic.

Expressionism is linked to many big changes in history. It grew as cities became huge and crowded. Many people felt that industrialization changed life too much. They used art to react to these big changes. The style even traveled across the whole world. Artists in Australia, Brazil, and the United States used it too. It overlaps with other art styles like Cubism and Surrealism. Even today, we can see how it changed how people share their hearts through art.
