Dada was a global art movement that changed how people saw the world.

It was born during the Great War. Artists used it to protest against war and nationalism. They wanted to challenge the old rules of culture. Some people called it "anti-art." This meant it challenged what people thought art should be. The name "Dada" might come from a French word for a hobby horse.

It could also just be a silly, childish sound. This helped the movement feel international and new.

Artists used many different ways to make their work. They created sound poetry that used strange noises. They made collages by pasting different pieces together.

In Berlin, they used photomontage, which is art made from many photos. Some artists used "found objects" to make art. Marcel Duchamp was famous for his "readymades." These were everyday items that he chose to call art.

This was a new way to think about creativity.

The movement began in Zürich, Switzerland, around 1916.

Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings started a place called the Cabaret Voltaire. It was a club for nightly shows and poems. They invited all kinds of artists to join them. Many artists came from places like Romania to join the group. Tristan Tzara became a major leader who spread these ideas. He sent letters to artists in many different cities. He helped make Dada a very large and famous movement.

Different cities had their own special ways of doing Dada.

In Zürich, the focus was on poetry and performances. In Berlin, the art was very political and used satire. Berlin artists used their work to protest against the war. New York was different because it was far from the fighting. The art there was more about testing new, deep ideas.

Each city added something unique to the global movement. This helped Dada grow in many different directions at once.

Dada did not stay the same forever. By the middle of the 1920s, it began to change. In Paris, the energy of Dada merged into a new style called Surrealism. Even though the movement changed, its ideas stayed alive. It influenced many other styles like Pop Art and Fluxus.

It also helped start new kinds of music. Dada taught us that art can be surprising and even silly. It showed that art can be a way to speak up about the world.
