Surrealism is a famous art and cultural movement.

The Persistence of Memory
The Persistence of Memory

It began in Europe after World War I. Artists wanted to express the unconscious mind. This is the part of the mind that works during dreams. They aimed to mix dreams and reality into a new state. André Breton called this a "super-reality" or surreality. This movement changed how people saw art and life. It was a way to free the imagination from strict rules.

Artists used many different ways to make their work. They created paintings, films, and music. They also wrote stories and performed in theater. One popular method was called automatic writing. This is a way of writing quickly without judging any thoughts.

Artists also used unexpected juxtapositions. This means they put two things together that do not belong. For example, they might place a strange object in a normal setting. This creates a startling and illogical effect for the viewer.

Surrealism has a very interesting history. The term was first used by Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917.

He used the word to describe a ballet called Parade. Later, the movement grew from the Dada movement. Dada was an earlier group that protested against traditional values. Many Surrealists met in Paris to share their new ideas. They wanted to use art to start a social revolution. They even linked their ideas to political causes like communism.

There were many important people in this movement. André Breton became the main leader. He published the Surrealist Manifesto to explain their goals.

In 1924, two different groups fought for the name. One group was led by Yvan Goll. Breton's group included famous names like Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst.

They even had a public fight over who owned the term. Eventually, Breton's group became the official one.

Surrealism connects to many things we see today. It uses ideas from psychology to understand dreams. The movement was heavily influenced by Sigmund Freud.

He studied how the unconscious mind works. Surrealists believed that dreams were just as important as real life. By looking at dreams, they could find new ways to be creative. This helped change art, philosophy, and even how we think about society. Their work still surprises people all over the world.
