He was a very important person in the early 20th century. He wrote poems, plays, and short stories. He also worked as a journalist for many different papers. Apollinaire believed that art must come from the imagination. He thought art should be close to nature and human life. This idea helped start many new ways of making art.

Apollinaire was very good at naming new art movements. He is credited with naming Cubism to describe a new style of painting.

He also named Orphism in 1912. This style was like music because it did not always look like real things. In 1917, he used the word Surrealism for the first time. He wrote poems without using any punctuation marks. This was his way of being modern in his writing.

His life began in Rome, Italy.

Jean Metzinger painted a famous Cubist portrait of him in 1910. Some people think Picasso also included him in the painting Three Musicians. In 1911, he joined the Puteaux Group of Cubist artists. He even gave a speech at a big art show in 1912. He was once even arrested because police thought he helped steal the Mona Lisa. However, he was released after one week because he did not do it.

His later years were marked by hard times. He served as an officer during World War I. He was wounded in the head by a piece of metal in 1916. While he was recovering, he wrote the play The Breasts of Tiresias. He died in 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic. He was 38 years old when he passed away. The French government called him "Mort pour la France." This means he died for his country because of his service.
