To create her art, Tamara used very specific methods. She studied with teachers like Maurice Denis and André Lhote. Her style mixed a refined version of cubism with a neoclassical look. Cubism uses geometric shapes to show objects. Neoclassical style is inspired by older, classical art. She often made her paintings look very crisp and direct. Later in life, she even used a palette knife. This tool helped her make paintings that looked fuzzy and soft.

Tamara had a very busy and changing life. She was born in Warsaw in 1894. Her true name was Tamara Rosa Hurwitz. She lived in Saint Petersburg and married a lawyer named Tadeusz Łempicki. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, she moved to Paris. In Paris, she became a star of the art world. She even signed some of her early paintings as "Lempitzki." This was the masculine form of her name.

Many important events shaped her career. In 1925, she showed her work at a huge exhibition. This event helped make the Art Deco style famous. In 1929, she painted a very famous self-portrait. It showed her driving a green Bugatti racing car. She wore a leather helmet and gloves in the painting. She also traveled to the United States in 1929. She went there to paint a portrait for a woman named Joan Jeffery.

Tamara's life took her all over the world. She lived in France, the United States, and Mexico. During World War II, she moved to the United States. She lived in Los Angeles and New York City. In 1963, she moved to Houston, Texas, to be with her daughter. Finally, she moved to Mexico in 1974. When she died in 1980, her ashes were scattered over the Popocatépetl volcano. Her art became popular again in the late 1960s.
