Surrealism is a way of making art and culture.

The Persistence of Memory
The Persistence of Memory

It began in Europe after World War I. Artists wanted to show the power of the unconscious mind. This is the part of the mind that works during dreams. They made art that looked like a dream. It often showed things that did not make sense.

André Breton was a leader of this movement. He wanted to mix dreams and real life. He called this a "super-reality."

Artists used many tools. They made paintings, films, and music. They also wrote stories and made plays. Some used a way called automatic writing. This means they wrote quickly without thinking or judging their ideas.

Surrealists liked to surprise people. They put two things together that do not belong. For example, they might put a strange object in a place it should not be. This creates a startling effect. The movement started in Paris. It spread to many countries around the world. It changed how people thought about art and life.
