The Elephant Celebes

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Max Ernst made a famous painting in 1921.

It is called "The Elephant Celebes." This art uses a style called Surrealism. This style feels like a strange dream. It also uses ideas from Dada. Dada is a way of making art by putting odd things together.

A giant mechanical elephant sits in the middle. It has a round body and a long hose. The body looks like a West African corn bin. The creature also has bull horns and a metal collar.

The sky is very odd. Two fish seem to fly in the air. A dark shape looks like a plane. These parts might show the scary feelings of war. A headless mannequin stands near the elephant. It wears a surgical glove.

Many people love this work. A group of musicians even used its name. They call themselves Elephant 6. The painting is now in the Tate Modern in London.

An artist named Roland Penrose once owned it. He used money from the painting to help other artists. He started a group called the Elephant Trust.
