He was a leader of a movement called surrealism. This art style focused on new and strange ideas. One way he did this was through automatic writing. This meant writing quickly without planning first. He wanted to let deep thoughts flow out freely.

Breton loved collecting art. He kept over 5,300 items in his home. His collection had paintings, drawings, and books.

He also kept art from many different places. During a hard time, he had to sell his items. Later, he worked to build his collection again.

He traveled to many countries. In Mexico, he met the artist Frida Kahlo. He also met Leon Trotsky.

Together, they wrote about the freedom of art. Later, he visited Haiti. There, he studied the art of Hector Hyppolite. Hyppolite was a painter and a priest. Breton helped the world learn about his work. Breton's ideas changed how people thought about art and writing.
