He was a French engineer and a writer. He also made very new kinds of music. He used real sounds to make his songs. This was called musique concrète. In French, this means "concrete music."

He did not just use pianos or violins. He used sounds from the real world. For example, he once used the noise of trains. He called this study the "Railroad Study."

Schaeffer used new tools to change these sounds. He used early tape recorders to edit them. He would play sounds backwards. He would also speed them up or slow them down. He even cut and joined pieces of tape together. These steps helped him make new sound-scapes.

He was a great teacher at the Paris Conservatory. Many famous musicians studied with him. One student was Jean Michel Jarre. Schaeffer helped change how we make music today. He showed us that any sound can be art. People often call him the "Musician of Sounds."
