She was born in Helsinki, Finland. Later, she moved to Paris, France. She studied many kinds of music there.

Saariaho played the piano, violin, and guitar. She loved to find new sounds. She used computers to help her make music. This style is called spectralism. It looks at the tiny parts of a sound. She often mixed live music with electronic sounds. This made her music feel very thick and rich.

She wrote many types of works. She wrote operas, which are large musical plays. She also wrote pieces for small groups. In 2019, a magazine called her the greatest living composer. Many big groups played her music. This included the New York Philharmonic.

Saariaho also helped people make music. She gave money to build a new organ. Her last piece was called HUSH. It was for a trumpet and an orchestra. It was played in Finland after she died in 2023. Her music stays with us today.
