He was a key leader in a style called German Expressionism. This art style focuses on strong feelings and deep emotions. Marc is best known for his paintings of animals in nature. He used bright, primary colors to tell a story. For him, colors had special meanings. He used blue to show masculinity and spirituality. He used yellow to show feminine joy. He used red to represent the sound of violence.

Marc's art was built through careful study and friendship. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1903 and 1907, he visited Paris to copy old paintings. This helped him learn new ways to use paint. He loved the work of Vincent van Gogh. In 1911, Marc helped start a group called Der Blaue Reiter. This name means "The Blue Rider." He worked with artists like Wassily Kandinsky and August Macke. They wanted to create a new way of seeing the world through color.

Franz Marc was born in 1880 in Munich, Bavaria.

His father, Wilhelm, was a landscape painter. His mother, Sophie, was a homemaker. Marc first wanted to study theology like his brother. However, he chose to study art instead. He joined the Academy of Fine Arts in 1900. He also traveled to Greece in 1906 with his brother Paul. These travels helped shape his unique way of painting.

Life became very difficult during World War I. Marc was drafted into the German Army in 1914. He served as a cavalryman and later became a lieutenant. He even used his art skills to help the army. He painted camouflage covers to hide equipment from planes. He used a style called pointillism to do this. Sadly, Marc died in 1916 at the Battle of Verdun.

He was killed by a shell splinter during the fight.

Even after his death, Marc's art faced hard times. In the 1930s, the Nazi party called his work "degenerate." They thought his modern style was not good. They removed about 130 of his works from museums. Many paintings were sold or taken away. Luckily, most of his work survived the war. Today, his paintings are very valuable and loved.
