He is known for showing life exactly as it was. His art was very realistic and sometimes quite harsh. He wanted to show the truth about people and society. This included the joy of life and the sadness of war. Many people consider him a leader of a style called Neue Sachlichkeit. This name means "New Objectivity" in English. He used this style to show the real world without hiding anything.

Dix used many different ways to make his art. He often painted with thin layers of oil paint. He did this over a base layer called tempera. This was a method used by old masters long ago. He also made etchings, which are prints made on metal.

Sometimes he used collage to create his works. Collage is a way of making art by sticking pieces together. He even used silverpoint to make very detailed drawings on paper.

Dix was born in Untermhaus, Germany, in 1891.

His father worked in an iron foundry. His mother was a seamstress who wrote poetry. Young Otto spent time in his cousin's art studio. This helped him decide to become an artist. He studied at a school in Dresden between 1906 and 1910. At first, he mostly painted landscapes and portraits. He learned many skills during his early years as a student.

His life changed during the First World War. Dix volunteered for the German Army to serve. He worked in a machine-gun unit on the Western front. He also served on the Eastern front. The war was a very difficult and scary time for him.

He saw things that stayed in his mind for years. He even had nightmares about the destruction he saw. He made a famous set of fifty etchings called Der Krieg to show these experiences.

Later in life, Dix faced hard times with the government. In 1933, the Nazi leaders took power in Germany. They did not like his art and called it "degenerate." This meant they thought his work was bad for the nation. They even took away his job as a teacher in Dresden.
