He creates art that feels very heavy and deep. His work often looks at the dark parts of history. He wants people to think about the past of Germany. He also explores big ideas about life and the universe. Many of his pieces are made on a huge scale. This size helps people feel the weight of his subjects. He uses art to search for the meaning of existence.

Kiefer does not use just regular paint for his art. He adds many different materials to his work. He uses things like straw, clay, and lead. He also uses ash, shellac, and broken glass.

These items make the surfaces of his paintings very thick. He sometimes uses acid baths to change his materials. He even uses sticks or axes to hit them. He likes to see how lead looks when it melts. He uses straw to represent energy and heat.

Kiefer was born in Donaueschingen, Germany, in 1945. He grew up near a city that was heavily bombed. This was during the end of World War II. He studied art at academies in Freiburg and Karlsruhe. He earned his art degree in 1969. Later, he studied under the artist Joseph Beuys. In 1971, he moved to a studio in Hornbach. His work from this first time is called "The German Years." He moved to France in 1992.

His art connects to many different stories and books. He was inspired by the poems of Paul Celan. He also studied the Kabbalah, which is a spiritual way of thinking. Some of his paintings show ancient Egyptian themes. He has made large works about the cosmos and the stars. In the 1970s, he made art about German myths. He even made works about the music of Richard Wagner. These stories help him talk about how societies change. He shows how things can be destroyed and then reborn.

Kiefer's work is part of styles called New Symbolism and Neo-Expressionism. These names describe how he uses symbols to show ideas. He often puts names of famous people in his art. He also uses special signs called sigils. His art can be very fragile because of the plants he uses. This fragility is a big contrast to his heavy subjects. He believes his art needs the right space to work. If the space is wrong, the art loses its power. He continues to live and work in Paris today.
