Dix fought in the First World War. The war was a very hard time. He saw many sad things during the fight. These sights stayed in his mind. He used his art to show these truths. He made art that looked very real. This style is called realism. He also used a style called Neue Sachlichkeit, which means "New Objectivity." This style showed life exactly as it was.

He made many kinds of art. He made paintings and drawings. He even used collage. Collage is a way to make art by sticking different things together. He also made etchings. An etching is a type of print made on metal.

Some leaders in Germany did not like his work. They called it "degenerate art." This meant they thought it was bad or wrong. They even stopped him from teaching. Later, Dix moved to a new area. He kept making art until he died in 1969.
