He was a leader in the Surrealist movement. This group of artists made work that felt like dreams. Magritte liked to paint common things in strange ways. He often put familiar objects in unexpected places. This made people wonder about what is real.

His art helps us think about the world. He wanted to create mystery through his paintings.

Magritte used a very special way to make art. He painted objects so they looked very real. Then, he put them in places they did not belong. For example, he painted heavy rocks floating like clouds.

He also painted scenes where a view looked like part of a room. He called this series *The Human Condition*. He used an easel to blend the painting with the real world. This made the viewer question what was truly there.

Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium, in 1898.
