Bosch usually painted with oil on panels made of oak wood. He used a limited palette of colors from his time. For blue skies, he often used a pigment called azurite. He used green paints like malachite for leaves and grass. For people, he used colors like ochre and red lake. Unlike many other painters, he sometimes left his brushstrokes visible. This style is called impasto painting and looks quite rough.

Very little is known about Bosch's early life or training. He was born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch. His grandfather, Jan van Aken, was also a painter. It is likely that a father or uncle taught him. He lived most of his life in or near his home town. He even joined a respected group called the Brotherhood of Our Lady. This group was made of many influential citizens.

Bosch lived during a time of great change in the Netherlands. He was likely born in the mid-1450s. In 1463, a huge fire destroyed 4,000 houses in his town. He probably saw this event when he was thirteen. He married a woman named Aleid Goyaerts van den Meervenne. Bosch died on August 9, 1516, in 's-Hertogenbosch. Today, only about 25 paintings are definitely known to be his.

Many people recognize his work through large paintings called triptychs. A triptych is a work made of three connected parts. His most famous one is The Garden of Earthly Delights. The left side shows the Garden of Eden. The middle shows people in a joyful, strange landscape. The right side shows a dark, night-time scene of hell.

His style even influenced other famous artists like Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
