He lived and worked in the city of Bruges. He was a leader in a style called Early Netherlandish painting. This style helped change how art looked in Northern Europe. Many people call him a master of the Northern Renaissance. Some even thought he invented oil painting.

He was famous for making his art look very real.

Van Eyck used oil paint in a new and special way. This allowed him to show tiny details and natural light. He could paint things to look exactly like they do in real life. He often painted religious scenes or portraits of important people.

He sometimes made large works called polyptychs, which are paintings with many panels. He also made smaller works like diptychs, which have two panels. His skill with oil paint changed how other artists worked for a long time.

Jan was born around 1380 or 1390 in Maaseik.

This place is in what is now Belgium. He likely learned to paint from his brother, Hubert. Hubert died in 1426, but he helped Jan start a very famous work. By 1422, Jan was already a master painter in The Hague. He had his own workshop with assistants to help him. He was a very well-educated man who knew Latin and Greek.

Jan worked for a powerful ruler named Philip the Good.

Philip gave Jan a high salary. This money let Jan paint whatever he pleased. Jan also acted as a diplomat for the Duke. In 1428, he traveled to Lisbon to paint Isabella of Portugal. He had to paint her face very honestly for the Duke. Jan also finished the great Ghent Altarpiece in 1432.

We can still see Jan's amazing work today.

About 20 of his paintings are still known to exist. He often signed his work with a motto. It said "ALS ICH KAN," which means "As I can." This was a clever pun on his name. Jan died in July 1441 in Bruges. His legacy lives on through the beautiful things he created. His style helped start a new way of seeing the world through art.
