Oil painting is a special way to make art using pigments and drying oil.

The oil acts as a binder to hold the color together. This method is very popular for painting on canvas, wood, or copper.

Artists love oil because it offers great flexibility and rich, dense colors. It allows them to use many layers to show light and dark.

Because the paint stays wet for a long time, artists can easily change colors or forms. They can even remove a wet layer to start over.

Making oil paint involves mixing colored powder with a specific oil.

Common oils include linseed oil, poppyseed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. Linseed oil comes from the flax seed and is used for most tasks.

Some artists use walnut or poppyseed oil for lighter colors. These oils yellow less than linseed oil when they dry. An artist might even boil oil with resin to make a protective varnish. They can also use turpentine to make the paint thinner.

History shows that oil painting has deep roots in many places.

The oldest known oil paintings are Buddhist murals in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. These beautiful works date back to the 7th century AD.

In Europe, people used oil for statues and woodwork starting in the 12th century. A monk named Theophilus Presbyter wrote about oil painting in a book around 1125. Later, painters in Northern Europe made oil the main way to paint images. By the Renaissance, it had mostly replaced egg tempera for many artists.

There are many ways to apply these paints to a surface.

Most artists use paintbrushes to spread the color. Some use palette knives to scrape or apply paint. Artists must follow a rule called "fat over lean." This means each new layer should have more oil than the one below it. If they do not, the painting might crack or peel. Some artists like a smooth surface, while others like thick, rough textures. This style of thick paint is called impasto.

As time passed, the tools for oil painting changed quite a bit.

For a long time, artists had to mix their own paints in a studio. This made it hard to paint outside. Everything changed in 1841 thanks to John Goffe Rand. He invented the collapsible metal tube for paint. This invention allowed artists to carry colors easily. Now, they can practice plein air painting, which means painting outdoors in the fresh air.
