arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Oil paint is a special tool used to make beautiful art. It is made by mixing tiny bits of color, called pigments, into a drying oil.

Most artists use linseed oil, which comes from the flax plant. Some people use oils from poppy seeds or walnuts instead. This paint is very useful because it is waterproof. It can protect wood on buildings or even metal on ships and bridges. Because the colors are so bright and strong, people love using it for many things.

Making oil paint can be a very careful job. In the past, artists had to do this by hand. They would put pigment and oil on a glass or marble slab. Then, they used a tool called a muller to grind them together. They had to be very patient to make a smooth paste.

Today, big machines called mill rollers do this work for many paints. Artists can also change how the paint works. They might add a solvent like turpentine to make it thinner. They can even add varnish to make the dried paint look shiny.

People have been using oil paint for a very long time. The oldest examples were found in Afghanistan. These were Buddhist paintings made in cave-like rooms.

They used oils from walnuts, poppy seeds, and castor beans. By the 12th century, these paints reached Europe. At first, they were used for simple decorations on wood. Later, famous artists like Jan van Eyck used oil to create amazing details. He might have even mixed his paint with ground glass or bones. Other artists, like Leonardo da Vinci, added beeswax to keep the paint from turning dark.

There are many different types of color in oil paint. Some colors come from the earth, like ochre or umber. Other colors come from living things, such as the madder root.

Scientists have also created many new synthetic colors. These new colors give artists a huge range of choices. In 1841, a man named John Goffe Rand invented the metal paint tube. Before this, artists used pig bladders to carry their paint. The new tubes were much easier to use and could be closed with a cap. This allowed artists to take their colors outside to paint in the sun.

Oil paint is different from other paints because it dries very slowly. This slow speed is a great gift to an artist. It means they can blend colors together right on the canvas. They can also fix mistakes or change parts of the picture easily. This is much harder with egg tempera, which dries very fast. Because it stays wet, artists can create soft shadows and bright light. This helped start new styles of art, like Impressionism. Without those handy metal tubes, that style of art might never have happened.
