Oil is a special kind of liquid. It is made of molecules called hydrocarbons. Most oils are liquid at room temperature. One important thing to know is that oil is hydrophobic. This means it does not mix with water. Instead, oil is lipophilic. This means it mixes easily with other oils.

There are different ways that oil is made. Organic oils come from living things like plants and animals. These oils contain lipids, which are fats and other chemicals. Some oils also have waxes or proteins inside them. Another kind is mineral oil, which comes from crude oil. This crude oil starts as tiny ancient things like algae and zooplankton. Over a long time, natural processes turn these tiny things into oil deep underground.

People have used oil for a very long time. The word for oil comes from ancient Greek words. The Greek word "elaion" meant olive oil. In the 12th or 13th century, people used a Latin word called "oleum." In the 18th and 19th centuries, people used whale oil to light lamps. Later, people started using natural gas and electricity for light instead.

We use oil for many different jobs today. We use vegetable oils like sunflower or maize to fry food. Some oils, like fish oil, have omega-3 fatty acids that help our bodies. In machines, mineral oils act as lubricants. Lubrication helps parts move smoothly without sticking. We also use crude oil to make fuel. A single barrel of crude oil can be turned into diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline.

Oil is also used to make many things you see every day. It is used to make paints, plastics, and even medicines. Some people use specially prepared oils for religious ceremonies. In ancient Greece and Rome, people used olive oil for lighting. They also used it to clean their skin. This worked because the oil would pull dirt to the surface.
