An oil lamp is a tool used to make light.

It uses a liquid fuel to burn for a long time. This is different from a candle. A candle uses solid wax for fuel. An oil lamp needs a container to hold its liquid. This container is often called a fuel reservoir or a fuel chamber.

These lamps have been used for thousands of years. People still use them today to create a cozy feeling. They are a special way to light up a room.

How does an oil lamp work? It works through a simple step-by-step way. First, a textile wick is placed inside the lamp. The wick drops down into the liquid fuel. Next, the end of the wick is lit with fire. As the wick burns, it draws the oil up from the reservoir. This allows the lamp to provide light continuously.

The fuel is pulled up the wick to keep the flame going. This process lets the lamp burn much longer than a simple flame.

People have used oil lamps since ancient times. Very old stone lamps were found in a cave in Lascaux.

These stone lamps date back 10,000 to 15,000 years. Some people believe shell-lamps existed more than 6,000 years ago. In 1780, the Argand lamp was made. This lamp quickly replaced older, basic oil lamps. Later, kerosene lamps became popular around 1850.

Some people used animal fats like fish oil or whale blubber. In the 1830s, people sold camphene and burning fluid. These were made from spirits of turpentine and alcohol. As petroleum became common, kerosene became a main fuel. Today, many modern lamps use gas or petroleum for emergencies.

Lamps come in many shapes and materials. Some are made of clay, silver, or even gold.
