It usually has a frame that acts as a protective enclosure. This enclosure keeps a flame safe from wind or rain. In the past, people used candles or wicks in oil. Some lanterns even used heated mesh to create light. Today, many lanterns use battery-powered lights. These are easier to carry and work well in drafty places. They are very reliable for outdoor use.

How a lantern works depends on its fuel. Some use a simple wick in oil to stay lit. Other types use a mantle, which is a woven ceramic piece. When a flame heats this mantle, it glows very brightly. This is called being incandescent. To keep the heat steady, a glass shield called a chimney is used.

Some lanterns are even more special. A dark lantern has a sliding shutter. This allows you to make the light dark without putting out the candle. This was helpful for people who needed to wait in the dark.

People have used lanterns for a very long time. In 1417, the Mayor of London ordered homes to hang lanterns outside in winter. This was the first organized public street lighting. In the Middle Ages, watchmen carried lanterns while patrolling streets at night. On April 18, 1775, Paul Revere used lanterns for a famous signal. He held two lanterns in the Old North Church to signal patriots. This helped them know that British troops were crossing the Charles River.

Lanterns have many specific jobs in history. Railroad workers used them to signal trains about the track ahead. Some lanterns even had color gels to show a stop signal. On ships, lanterns were very important for safety. Using unprotected flames below deck was a major risk for wooden ships. In fact, pirate codes even had rules about using lanterns to prevent fires. In the mid-1800s, ships also used lanterns that blinked codes to send messages. These tools helped keep people safe and helped them communicate.

Today, we see lanterns in many parts of our lives. They are used in religious walks in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Many Asian festivals use them, like the Lantern Festival in China. Some people fly sky lanterns high into the air. However, some places like Canada have rules against this for fire safety. You can also find decorative lanterns that hang on buildings or sit on the ground. Some even work with solar power to stay lit using the sun. They connect our ancient history to our modern world.
