Lanterns can do more than just light a path. They can also be used for signaling. In the 1800s, ships used blinking lights to send messages. Railroad workers used them to tell trains when to stop. Some lanterns have a sliding cover. We call these dark lanterns. You can use the cover to make the light go dark without putting out the flame.

Many cultures use lanterns for festivals. In China, people fly sky lanterns into the air. Some places have rules about this to keep people safe from fire. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, lanterns are used in religious walks. Lanterns are very useful tools for seeing in the dark.
