People use them outdoors or during power outages. They are also helpful in places without permanent lights. Most flashlights have a few main parts. A light source sits inside a reflector. A clear cover or lens protects the parts. A battery provides the power. A switch turns the light on and off. All these parts are held in a case.

How a flashlight works depends on its light source. Older models used incandescent bulbs. These have a glass bulb and a tungsten filament. The filament must get hot to make light. Modern flashlights mostly use LEDs, or light-emitting diodes. An LED is a tiny part that makes light. LEDs are very efficient. They can produce much more light than old bulbs using the same amount of power.

Some LEDs use a chip on board, or COB, to make white light. This uses many small LEDs under a layer of phosphor. This method makes a very bright beam.

The history of the flashlight began with new battery technology. In 1887, the first dry cell battery was invented. It used a paste instead of a liquid. This meant it would not spill or break easily. In 1899, David Misell designed an electric device. He received a U.S. patent for it on January 10, 1899. His design used D batteries in a paper tube. It had a light bulb and a brass reflector.

Early versions were expensive and did not sell very well.

Many things changed to make flashlights better. In 1904, the tungsten-filament lamp was developed. This was much more efficient than older carbon filaments. By 1907, many types were available. These included pocket penlights and large searchlights. By 1922, there were 10 million flashlight users in the United States. In the early 2000s, LED flashlights became common. The company Maglite made its first LED flashlight in 2006.
