An incandescent light bulb is a tool that makes light using electricity.

It works through a process called Joule heating. This happens when an electric current flows through a thin wire called a filament. The wire gets so hot that it begins to glow. This glowing light is what we call incandescence.

These bulbs are very useful for many different things. They can be used in homes, cars, or even in flashlights. They work well with both alternating current and direct current.

To make the light last, the filament must be protected. It sits inside a glass bulb that is either empty or filled with an inert gas. This protection stops oxidation, which is when the filament burns up in the air.

Electric current reaches the filament through wires or terminals inside the glass. A bulb socket holds the bulb in place and provides the electrical connections. These bulbs come in many different sizes and voltage ratings. They can range from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts.

Many people worked to make these bulbs practical over many years. In 1802, Humphry Davy used a huge battery to glow a platinum strip.

In 1878, Joseph Swan began developing a way to stop bulbs from turning black. His house, Underhill, was the first home in the world to have light from a bulb.

Thomas Edison is also famous for his work with electric light. He created a version that worked well for a large system of lights. His version used a carbon filament and a very strong vacuum.

There are many important facts about how these bulbs use energy. They are not very efficient at making light. Less than 5% of the energy they use turns into visible light. The rest of the energy is released as heat.

A typical 120 V bulb has a luminous efficacy of 16 lumens per watt. This is much lower than a white LED lamp, which has 100 lumens per watt.

Home light bulbs usually last around 1,000 hours. In contrast, LEDs can last between 20,000 and 30,000 hours.

Even though they are less efficient, we still see them in many places. Some people use the heat they make for special jobs. For example, heat lamps are used in incubators or in lava lamps.

You might even see them used in an Easy-Bake Oven toy. Some governments are now banning these bulbs to save energy. They want people to use more efficient lights like LEDs or fluorescent lamps. This helps reduce the total amount of energy we use every day.
