Glassblowing is a special way to shape molten glass into many forms.

A person who does this is called a glassblower. They can make anything from drinking cups to window glass. Some workers, called lampworkers, use a small torch to make tiny things. They might make beads or tools for science labs. This skill is both a way to make useful things and a way to make art.

To start, a glassblower uses a long tube called a blowpipe. They dip the tip into a hot furnace to pick up a blob of molten glass. This blob is called a gather. It is a bit like how honey sticks to a honey dipper.

The worker rolls the hot glass on a flat steel surface called a marver. This makes a cool skin on the outside of the glass. Then, the worker blows puffs of air into the pipe. This creates a bubble, which is also called a parison. The worker can then shape the glass by rotating the pipe or using tools like jacks and shears.

This way of making glass started a long time ago. People began glassblowing in the middle of the 1st century BC. Before this, glassworkers did not know they could inflate glass. They had to use other ways to shape it. Soon, many different ways to blow glass were invented. One famous example of old glass is the Portland Vase from the Roman period.

There are two main ways to blow glass. The first way is called free-blowing. In this method, the worker shapes the glass mostly by hand. This was the most popular way to make glass until the late 19th century. The second way is called mold-blowing. This method was invented during the early part of the 1st century AD.

In mold-blowing, the worker blows the glass into a carved mold. This can be a single piece or several pieces joined together. Using molds helps people make many glass objects very quickly.

Glassblowing uses three different furnaces to work correctly. The first furnace holds the melted glass. The second is called a glory hole, and it is used to reheat the glass.

The final furnace is called an annealer. The glass must stay in the annealer to cool down slowly for hours or even days. If the glass cools too fast, it might crack or shatter from the heat stress. This slow cooling helps the glass stay strong and beautiful.
