Glassblowing is a way to shape molten glass.

A glassblower uses a long tube called a blowpipe. First, they dip the pipe into a hot furnace. This picks up a blob of glass. This is called a gather. It is like picking up honey with a dipper.

The worker rolls the glass on a flat surface. This is called marvering. It helps shape the glass and makes a cool skin. Then, the worker blows air into the pipe. This makes the glass grow into a bubble.

There are two main ways to blow glass. In free-blowing, the worker shapes the glass by hand. They can swing or rotate the pipe. This lets them make many shapes. In mold-blowing, the worker blows glass into a carved mold. This helps them make many items very fast.

Glass must cool slowly in a special oven. This is called an annealer. It stops the glass from cracking.

Some workers use a small torch. These are called lampworkers. They make tiny things like beads or science tools.
