Glass wool is a material used to keep buildings warm.

It is made of very thin glass fibers. These fibers look like soft wool. They are held together by a binder. A binder is a glue that sticks parts together.

How is it made? First, people mix sand and old glass. They heat the mix until it melts. Then, they use a machine called a spinner. This machine spins very fast. It pulls the hot glass through tiny holes. This makes long, thin threads. This way is a bit like making cotton candy.

The glass threads trap many small pockets of air. This is the most important part. Air is a good insulator. An insulator is something that stops heat from moving easily. The small air pockets stop heat from flowing through the walls.

People use glass wool in many ways. It can come in flat pads called batts. It can also come in long rolls called blankets. Workers put it in attics or walls. It can even be sprayed on surfaces. It helps keep heat in and keeps noise out.
