Glass is a hard material. It is an amorphous solid. This means its tiny parts do not have a neat pattern.

Most glass is made by cooling hot, melted liquid very fast. This is called quenching.

This quick cooling stops the parts from forming a pattern. Most modern glass is soda-lime glass. It is made of about 70% silica.

Glass can also be found in nature. Volcanic glass is called obsidian. It forms when lava cools quickly.

Lightning can also make glass. It happens when lightning hits sand. This creates hollow, rootlike shapes called fulgurites.

People have used glass for a long time. The first glass objects were beads. This happened at least 3600 BC in places like Egypt.
