Obsidian

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. It forms when lava cools very fast. This fast cooling stops crystals from growing.

Because no crystals grow, the rock stays smooth like glass. This makes it an igneous rock. Most obsidian is dark in color. This happens because of iron in the lava.

Some obsidian has white spots. These spots are tiny crystals. This type is called snowflake obsidian.

Other types show rainbow colors or a gold sheen.

Obsidian is very hard but also brittle. This means it breaks easily. When it breaks, it makes very sharp edges. People call this a conchoidal fracture. Long ago, people used this to make tools. They used a way called knapping to shape it. This helped them make arrowheads and blades.

Some people even polished it to make mirrors. Scientists today can study obsidian to learn about the past. They can trace where a tool came from by looking at its parts.
