Dacite is a volcanic rock. It forms when lava cools very fast.

This rock is made of two main parts. These are quartz and plagioclase feldspar. Quartz is a hard mineral. Plagioclase feldspar is another common mineral.

Dacite can look many ways. Some pieces are grey or pale brown. Others are dark colors. Some have big crystals inside. We call these big crystals phenocrysts.

The rock can also have a fine texture. This means the parts are too small to see easily.

This rock forms in a special way. It happens when one plate slides under another. This is called subduction. Deep underground, rocks melt and change. The liquid rock, or magma, rises up. Because it has much silica, the magma is thick. This thickness can lead to big, explosive eruptions. Mount St. Helens is a famous example. You can even find dacite on Mars!
