Tuff is a type of rock made from volcanic ash.

This ash comes from a volcano during an eruption. Hot gases inside the volcano can blow the magma apart. This throws solid particles into the air. These bits are called tephra. If the particles are smaller than 2 mm, we call them ash.

When this ash settles, it can turn into solid rock. This change is called lithification.

Sometimes the ash is very hot. The heat can weld the pieces together. This makes a rock called welded tuff.

Tuff is a relatively soft rock. People have used it for building for a long time. The Romans used it often for their work. On Easter Island, the Rapa Nui people used it. They made most of the moai statues from it.
