Tuff can be categorized by what it is made of. Vitric tuff is composed mainly of shards of volcanic glass. These shards are often irregular or triangular in shape. Crystal tuffs consist mostly of individual crystals. Lithic tuffs are made from pulverized rock fragments. 
Humans have utilized the softness of tuff for thousands of years. The Romans frequently used it for large construction projects. 


Some tuff deposits are massive in scale. The Lava Creek Tuff in Wyoming was formed 631,000 years ago. This eruption had a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 8. This is the highest rating for an eruption in the last 10,000 years. The volume of this deposit was at least 1,000 times larger than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. 
Tuff connects the study of igneous petrology to sedimentology. While it is an igneous rock formed from magma, it is often studied as a sediment because of how the ash settles and moves. By studying these layers, geologists can understand ancient environments. They can trace how ash was moved by wind, water, or gravity. This helps us reconstruct the history of our planet's most violent and transformative natural events.
