They call these statues moai. Most were carved between the years 1250 and 1500. The people made them from tuff. Tuff is a type of rock made of ash.

These statues represent ancestors. The Rapa Nui believed the statues held a sacred power. They call this power mana. Most moai have very large heads. The heads are three-eighths of the whole size. Many statues also have red stone hats called pukao. These hats represent the hair of chiefs.

The moai usually sit on stone platforms called ahu. Most statues face inland toward the villages. They look like they are watching over the people. Some moai face the sea to help travelers.

Moving these heavy stones was a big task. The statues can weigh many tonnes. One tall statue named Paro was almost 10 meters high. Some people think the statues helped the soil stay good for food. Today, many moai still stand on the island.
