Small streams flow down from the hills to the sea. The land is hard to cross in the middle. There are no roads through the mountains.

A town called Avarua sits on the north coast.

It is the capital city. Avarua has the main airport and the Parliament buildings. A road called Ara Tapu goes all around the coast. An even older road called Ara Metua also circles the island. It was built with stone slabs in the 11th century.

Around the island, there are white sandy beaches. A reef sits in the ocean near the shore. This reef creates a calm lagoon. People visit to swim, dive, or hike. You can even see native birds in the Takitumu Conservation Area.
