This volcano is very active. It has erupted 22 times since the 1700s. Many people live near it. Because it is near people, experts study it closely. They call it a Decade Volcano. This is a list of volcanoes that are very dangerous. One big eruption happened in June 2019. Ash went high into the sky. Lava even broke the New Britain Highway in three places. Ulawun also lets out a gas called sulphur dioxide. It lets out about 7 kg/s of this gas. This is 2% of all the gas in the world. The volcano moves because of plates in the Earth. One plate slides under another plate. This makes the volcano work.
