Mount Papandayan

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Mount Papandayan is a large volcano in Indonesia. It is a stratovolcano. This means it is built from layers of lava and ash.

These layers grew over many hundreds of years.

In 1772, a big eruption happened. Part of the mountain fell down in a large slide. This slide destroyed 40 villages. The mountain changed its shape after this. It now has two peaks. It also has a flat area 1.1 km wide. One peak is called Papandayan. The other is Mount Puntang.

Today, many people visit the mountain. They walk across the crater. They can see fumaroles. These are vents that let out steam and hot fumes.

Visitors also see bubbling mud pools and yellow sulfur. There are also meadows with Javanese Edelweiss flowers. The mountain can be active. In 2011, scientists measured a lot of carbon dioxide gas. This gas came from the ground at the summit crater. Because of this, the alert level went up.
