Mount Papandayan

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Mount Papandayan is a large volcano in Indonesia. It sits in the Garut Regency. This area is southeast of Bandung in West Java. It is also southwest of the town of Garut. This type of volcano is called a stratovolcano. A stratovolcano is built from many layers. These layers are made of lava and ash. They also include bits of volcanic rock. These layers grew over many hundreds of years.

This volcano has a very interesting shape. In 1772, a huge eruption happened. The northeast side of the mountain collapsed. This caused a giant debris avalanche. It was a catastrophic event. It destroyed 40 villages and killed nearly 3,000 people. This event changed the mountain forever. It left a broad shape with two peaks. There is a flat area 1.1 km wide in the middle. This area holds the Alun-Alun crater. The two peaks are named Papandayan and Mount Puntang.

Scientists watch the volcano very closely. They look for signs of activity. In November 2002, an explosive eruption began. After that, the volcano became quite active again. In August 2011, the alert level went up. It moved from Level II, called "Vigilant," to Level III, called "Alert." This happened because of many different things. There were many long-period events. The rate of volcano tectonic earthquakes also went up. Scientists even measured 100% carbon dioxide gas in the ground.

Many people live near this mountain. In 2011, experts checked the risk to local people. They said 170,000 people could be affected. These people live in five subdistricts. The names are Cisurupan, Pamulihan, Bayongbong, Pakenjeng, and Sukaresmi. They also live in twenty villages. Experts thought 11,500 people might need to leave their homes. This shows how important it is to monitor the volcano.
