Mount Tambora is a famous active volcano in Indonesia.

It sits on the island of Sumbawa in the Lesser Sunda Islands. This mountain is a stratovolcano, which means it is built of steep layers.

The volcano forms because of subduction zones. This happens when the Australian Plate moves under the Sunda Plate. This movement creates the volcanic activity we see today. The mountain forms its own peninsula called the Sanggar peninsula. To its north is the Flores Sea. To its south lies the wide Saleh Bay.

Volcanoes work by moving hot, liquid rock called magma from deep underground. At Tambora, magma comes from the mantle and is changed by sediments from the crust.

Over many years, the magma chamber under the mountain fills up with heat and pressure. When the pressure gets too high, the volcano erupts. The 1815 eruption was very violent and included pyroclastic flows. These are hot clouds of ash and gas that rush down the mountain. The eruption also caused a caldera collapse. This is when the top of the volcano falls inward, leaving a large hole.

History shows that Tambora has been active for a very long time. Scientists believe volcanism began there between 57,000 and 43,000 years ago. The volcano had several large eruptions before the famous one in 1815. These happened around 3910 BC, 3050 BC, and 740 AD. In 1812, the mountain began to show signs of being active again. By April 1815, the eruption reached its highest intensity. It was a VEI-7 event on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. This means it was a massive and powerful explosion.

The 1815 eruption was the largest in recorded human history.

It ejected up to 150 cubic kilometers of volcanic material. The explosion was so loud it was heard in places like Thailand and Laos. Ash fell on many islands, including Borneo and Java. The mountain was once very tall, but the eruption lowered its height.

It also caused the year 1816 to be called the "Year Without a Summer." This happened because the ash cooled the Earth's climate. This cooling led to crop failures and famine in North America and Europe.

You can think of a volcano like a giant pressure cooker. If the steam inside builds up too much, it eventually bursts out. Mount Tambora is a real-world example of this amazing power. Today, people visit the area for hiking and to see wildlife.

You might see monkeys, wild boar, or colorful birds in the jungle. Scientists also visit to study the rocks and the mountain's activity. Even though it was very dangerous in the past, it remains a place of great wonder. It helps us learn how our planet works.
