Whakaari is a very busy and active volcano in New Zealand.

Many people also call it White Island. It sits in a place called the Bay of Plenty. The island is shaped like an oval. It is actually just the peak of a huge submarine volcano. Most of this volcano stays hidden under the sea.

The island is a stratovolcano. This means it was built by many layers of lava and ash over a long time. This building has been happening for about 150,000 years.

The volcano works through a system of heat and water. Hot fluids and gases move through the ground. This creates a hydrothermal system, which is a way that heat and water interact. This system makes hot springs, mud pools, and steaming vents called fumaroles.

In the crater, there is a lake of boiling, acidic water. This water is very strong and can even eat away at rocks. Sometimes, the water and steam cause explosions. These are called phreatic or phreatomagmatic eruptions. They happen when hot volcanic material meets water.

People have known about this volcano for a long time. James Cook saw the island in 1769. He noticed it was releasing a lot of volcanic gas. In the past, people even mined sulphur on the island. They did this until the 1930s.

Mining was a hard job and could be dangerous. In 1914, ten miners died when part of a crater wall fell down. This shows how much the island can change.

There have been many eruptions in recent years. The volcano erupted many times between 1975 and 2000. It also erupted in 2012, 2016, and 2019. A very large eruption happened on December 9, 2019.

There were 47 people on the island during that eruption. Sadly, 22 people died in that event. Many others were injured with severe burns. Scientists watch the volcano very closely to keep people safe.

Today, the island is a place for both science and travel.

Many tourists visit the island to see the amazing sights. Scientists also visit to study how volcanoes work. They use cameras and special tools to monitor the ground. These tools can help them find signs of an earthquake. This helps them prepare for any future activity. The island remains a powerful part of the natural world.
