Mount Ruapehu is a huge and active volcano in New Zealand.

It sits in the middle of the North Island. This mountain is the largest active volcano in the country. It also has the highest point on the North Island. The mountain has three big peaks. These are Tahurangi, Te Heuheu, and Paretetaitonga.

The name Ruapehu comes from the Māori language. It means "pit of noise" or "exploding pit." This is a good name for such a powerful mountain.

At the top, there is a deep, active crater. This crater holds a warm, acidic lake called Crater Lake. The lake fills up with steam and melting snow. Sometimes, eruptions leave behind dams made of tephra, which is volcanic ash and rock.

When these dams break, they cause a lahar. A lahar is a fast and destructive mudflow. These flows travel down the Whangaehu River. They can be very dangerous to people and places below.

Scientists believe Ruapehu has been erupting for a very long time. Some evidence suggests eruptions began 340,000 years ago. The oldest rocks on the mountain are 250,000 years old. The volcano grew in four big stages of activity. These stages left behind different layers of rock. The first was the Te Herenga Formation. Later came the Wahianoa, Mangawhero, and Whakapapa formations. Each stage changed the shape of the mountain.

Ruapehu is also a place of ice and snow. There are 18 glaciers on the mountain.

Two of these are crater glaciers located inside the active crater. Most of the ice is in three main glaciers. These include the Whangaehu, Summit Plateau, and Mangatoetoenui glaciers. The glaciers are very sensitive to changes in the climate. Since 1955, most of them have been getting thinner. This shows how much the weather affects the mountain.

Many people visit Ruapehu to enjoy the slopes. It is home to major ski resorts like Whakapapa, Turoa, and Tukino. Visitors can travel there using State Highway 48 or the Desert Road. However, the weather can change very quickly. High winds and heavy snow are common. In 2008, about 2,000 people had to be evacuated from a ski field. It is important to always be prepared for the mountain's power.
